The UK National Lottery was launched on 14 November 1994. The first draw took place on 19 November 1994.
Since launch, the National Lottery has raised over £28 billion for good causes.
Total National Lottery ticket sales for the year to 31 March 2011 were £5,827 million.

Since launch, the National Lottery has given over £40 billion in prizes and created over 2,000 millionaires.
The UK National Lottery returns a higher proportion of lottery revenue back to society than any other lottery operator in the world through prizes and Lottery Duty (totalling 40 per cent of sales).
The National Lottery has high standards of player protection. The National Lottery website and Play By Text services have been accredited by GamCare, the UK’s national centre for information, advice and practical help regarding the social impact of gambling.
Approximately 70 per cent of adults play the National Lottery on a regular basis, and more than 96 per cent of the UK population either live or work within two miles of a Lottery terminal.
National Lottery funding will contribute up to £2.2 billion towards the costs of staging the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
The National Lottery crossed fingers logo is instantly recognisable to 95 per cent of the UK population.
