Match-fixing: what do we do to prevent it?

Our Sports Betting Intelligence Unit (SBIU) works closely with the betting industry and with sports governing bodies to understand potential threats and help protect the integrity of sport and betting.

We collect information and develop intelligence about potentially corrupt betting activity. The majority of reports we receive are related to sports betting, however we do occasionally receive alerts about other markets such as TV reality shows or talent competitions.

Information can come from a number sources which includes (but is not limited to) alerts from the betting industry about suspicious activity on betting markets, concerns from sports governing bodies or tip offs through our confidential intelligence line.

SBIU develops intelligence and decides on the most effective course of action. This action is determined on a case by case basis. An outcome may involve simply logging information on our intelligence systems, passing information to a sports governing body or liaising with law enforcement.

Protecting betting integrity outlines our policy and approach to protecting betting integrity, which is primarily concerned with sports betting. However it also covers betting on non-sporting events; for example the winners of film awards.

What powers does the Gambling Commission have?

We can investigate and bring prosecutions regarding criminal offences under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005. If convicted, a person could face up to two years in jail plus a fine.

Misuse of inside information explains our approach to dealing with potential incidents of misuse of inside information in betting. It also covers what is expected from sports governing bodies (SGBs) and betting operators in relation to protecting sport and betting from the misuse of inside information.

How can I report suspicious activity?

Suspicious activity can be reported direct to the SBIU at sbiu@gamblingcommission.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can call our confidential intelligence line on +44 121 230 6655.
