Ensuring a fair Lottery for the nation
£28 billion for good causes
£40 billion in prizes
Annual Report 2009/2010
The Annual Report sets out the wide range of work we have undertaken over the year to safeguard the nation’s interest in the running of the National Lottery.
This was the first full year of the third licence to run the Lottery. The licence has provided further incentives to Camelot to maximise returns to good causes, as well as securing a better deal under which good causes receive a bigger share of the net proceeds from the Lottery. As a result, we are pleased to report that the Lottery has raised £1.6 billion for good causes over the year. This is an increase of 15% on last year. Of this £1.6 billion, £90 million is the direct benefit generated by the greater proportion of proceeds which goes to good causes under the new licence structure.
This increase has been achieved without compromising the high standards for propriety and player protection under which the Lottery operates. During the year we have improved our approach to regulation (through our ‘Regulating with Excellence’ programme) and this has enabled us to reduce our costs and the requirements placed on Camelot in a proportionate and risk-based way. This work will continue over the coming years.
