Randomness of Lotto Extra: summary of findings (2005)

The National Lottery Commission asked the Centre for the Study of Gambling at the University of Salford to verify that there is no evidence of non-randomness within the U.K. National Lottery’s Lotto Extra game. Analysing all Lotto Extra draws up to and including 16th July 2005, and a large sample of representative Lucky Dip selections issued in July 2005, specific objectives were to test whether:

(a) there is equality of frequency for each Lotto Extra number drawn;

(b) Lotto Extra draws are independent of preceding draws;

(c) the frequency of winners is as expected;

(d) there is any evidence of non-randomness within any combinations of Lotto Extra ball sets and draw machines;

(e) there is any evidence of non-randomness within Lotto Extra Lucky Dip selections.

The results of our investigations began with an exploratory data analysis. The findings here were that there appear to be no discrepancies and no incorrect entries in the database.
