Women and Gambling
In November 2007, we published two pieces of research that examine female participation in the National Lottery. % %
_Women and UK National Lottery play_% was undertaken on behalf of the National Lottery Commission by Dr Emma Casey from Kingston University. Based on quantitative and qualitative research undertaken in south-west %London%, Dr Casey examines all aspects of women’s National Lottery play and provides fascinating insights into their participation, motivations and attitudes. %
In order to provide context for Dr Casey’s research, we also published a report, Gender and the jackpot, based on segmentation analysis undertaken by Simpson Carpenter in 2006. This data, from a UK-representative sample of 4040, is taken from a larger piece of work originally commissioned as part of the third Licence competition. % %
The research reveals subtle differences in the ways that men and women play the National Lottery and their attitudes towards it. While both men and women dream of winning the jackpot, women place less emphasis on the chance of a ‘new life’ offered by such a win and focus instead on how they would enhance their current lifestyle.
Both reports are available to download on this page.
