Ensuring a fair Lottery for the nation
£28 billion for good causes
£40 billion in prizes
Response to Gambling Act 2005 (Variation of Monetary Limits) Order 2008
Society lotteries and the National Lottery each have equally valid roles to fulfil and it is to the benefit of society if both prosper. However, the intention and design behind current regulation is that they are intended to co-exist without being in direct competition with each other.
Any increase in the prize limits on society lotteries runs the risk of blurring the distinction with the National Lottery and opening the floodgates to new lotteries that could harm the National Lottery and the good causes it supports.
Also given that very few society lotteries are currently operating at the limits available to them, we would conclude that existing arrangements are adequate and appropriate for the scope of society lottery operations and to maintain the intrinsic character of the society lottery sector.
