Ensuring a fair Lottery for the nation
£28 billion for good causes
£40 billion in prizes

Response to the consultation by the Gambling Commission on prize competitions and free draws

The National Lottery Commission shares the Gambling Commission’s concerns regarding so called prize competitions and free draws that are, as a matter of law, unregulated Lotteries, including the National Lottery. All regulated Lotteries are required to raise money for good causes, which is not pre-requisite for prize competitions and free draws. The National Lottery has a unique position and has, since its launch in 1994, raised over £19 billion for good causes. We believe that it is important that the distinction between regulated lotteries and unregulated competitions and draws is maintained and is made clear to participants.
