Ensuring a fair Lottery for the nation
£28 billion for good causes
£40 billion in prizes
Incorrect jackpot message on EuroMillions tickets
Background
Camelot is required to ensure that any material designed to encourage or enable a player to enter into or play a lottery game is accurate and does not mislead players and is compatible with the game rules and procedures.
Condition
Condition 9(31) of the licence granted under Section 5 of the National Lottery etc. Act 1993 (as amended).
*Description*
On 27July 2006, the jackpot information that many players were given on their EuroMillions tickets overstated the top prize amount, referring to a jackpot of £24 million rather than £10 million. The mistake was caused by a human error when changing the layout of the ticket message, referring to a previous jackpot amount of £24 million. This affected tickets purchased at 1,500 National Lottery retailers.
Regulatory Action
The Commission wrote to Camelot, considered its response and subsequently decided that there had been a contravention of the licence requirement on the basis that the information was inaccurate and misleading to players. A licence breach was recorded on 21 December 2006.
Outcome
Camelot has introduced additional controls to minimise the risk of a repeat of this incident.
