Ensuring a fair Lottery for the nation
£28 billion for good causes
£40 billion in prizes
WAP Information Service
Background
Camelot is required to ensure that any material designed to encourage or enable a player to enter into or play a Lottery game, including the player facing screens on any website, is accurate and does not mislead players.
Condition
Condition 9(31) of the licence granted under Section 5 of the National Lottery etc. Act 1993 (as amended).
Description
Camelot appointed an organisation to run the WAP service on its behalf. The National Lottery WAP information service provides results and prize information. A player complaint revealed that the prize information on the National Lottery WAP information service for the HotPicks games had been incorrect between 23 October 2005 and 16 June 2006. For example, throughout this period, the prize for matching three numbers on HotPicks 3 was incorrectly shown as £7,000 rather than the correct prize amount of £450.
Regulatory Action
The Commission wrote to Camelot, considered its response and subsequently decided that there had been a contravention of the licence requirement on the basis that the information was inaccurate and misleading to players. A licence breach was recorded on 28 November 2006.
Outcome
Camelot has corrected the fault and no longer uses this supplier to provide the WAP service. Additional controls, improvements and checks have been introduced to minimise the risk of a repeat of this incident.
