Protecting Players

Protecting players is central to all that we do. Some of the important things we do to protect players are:

• Ensuring that the operator promptly pays prizes.

• Protecting against possible fraud, by checking that the operator implements appropriate security procedures to verify the identity of winners who claim prizes of more than £50,000.

• Undertaking checks to ensure that the operator protects the anonymity of winners, in line with its licence requirement.

• Making sure that clear information is available to players, including information on the games available, how to play then and how to claim prizes. Approving the rules and procedures for each game.

• Agreeing performance standards with the operator for the services it provides to players.

• Handling complaints if a player is unhappy with the service they have received from the operator.

• Ensuring that there are controls in place to protect against excessive play. For example, the licence requires the operator to have a strategy in place to prevent and ensure that the design and promotion of National Lottery games do not encourage excess play. We also work with the operator to help players manage spend on their interactive accounts responsibly.

• Ensuring that there are controls in place to protect against underage play. Camelot, for example, have a strategy to ensure that the design and promotion of National Lottery games do not encourage underage play. In addition, the licence requires the operator to conduct test purchases to ensure retail sales are not made to Under 16 year olds. Providing information to the public about lottery scams.
